Introduced in 1925, the first denim jacket was called the 91J, and was particularly popular with workers building the first railways. They called it the Lee 'Loco'. With its generous cut and single breast pocket, it is easy to see how much the style of the jacket has evolved over time.
In 1934 the 101J Cowboy Jacket was created, and a year later the 101LJ, a version with heavy lining.
This model quickly became popular with blue collar workers and cowboys, including legendary rodeo star Turk Greenough, who wanted to distinguish himself by having his girlfriend modify the jacket to a slimmer cut. Inspired by this, the H.D. Lee Company designed a new slim-fit denim jacket especially for cowboys and rodeo fans.
