He moved to Paris in the early 1950s to study fashion design. He worked as an assistant to a number of designers, including Guy Laroche and Christian Dior, before launching his own label in 1980. Alaia's designs were immediately acclaimed by critics and fashion insiders. He was known for his innovative use of fabrics, his attention to detail, and his flattering silhouettes. His designs were worn by celebrities and fashion icons such as Grace Jones, Naomi Campbell, and Beyoncé. Alaia was a prolific designer, producing collections of ready-to-wear, haute couture, and accessories. He also designed costumes for films and theater productions. Alaia died in Paris in 2017 at the age of 82. His legacy continues to inspire designers around the world.
